COUSIN COUPLE POEMS
The following
poems were found on the Cousin
Couples Web site, described as "The world's primary information
and support network for and about romantic relationships among cousins."
There is a Poetry Forum for the site, where readers post cousin love-related
creative writing.
We here at La Petite Zine feel that cousin love-related poetry
is a particularly timely issue, given the most recent findings from
the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Drawing from the results
of six studies from 1965 to 2000, researchers there found only a "slightly
increased risk" of genetic defects in cousins who decide to marry
and have children.
In the non-cousin-marrying general population, the risk of, say, spina
fida, is 3% to 4%. The risk of that same birth defect happening to first
cousins who marry, researchers say, is another 1.7% to 2.8%. Although
the added risk is double that of the non-cousin-bred children, it is
not enough to discourage cousins from having children. The report, published
in a recent issue in The Journal of Genetic Counseling, has a
boon for cousin couple-marrying activists.
Still, controversies linger over whether laws that prohibit cousin marriage
should be abolished, as well as the violent reactions that arise when
these relationships are exposed. As a result, many cousin lovers have
turned to poetry, announcing their often illegal, taboo, but nonetheless
negligible increased-birth defect-causing love in free and traditional
verse.
What is also interesting to note, besides the heated and often vulgar
exchanges that arise here in reader responses, included here, is the
liberal borrowing of the second poem from the Langston Hughes' "Mother
to Son," which begins, famously, "Well, son, I'll tell
you:/Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." -- DN
We are cousins....and we love
By

What is this thing that's happening with my cousin and with me?
I thought I knew all the answers, but now it's plain to see
There's something here I can't explain, a mystical attraction
A teenage crush that's blossomed into love's full satisfaction
It's always been there simmering, quietly on the back burner
A little wink, a touch, a kiss, a warm and gentle murmur
With all respect for family ties, we denied it when we were younger
But lately it's become something that's more like passion's hunger
We used to have such good control, would never let it show
But soon this love between us, the whole family will know
Stolen glances, secret touches, we can't hide them anymore
When our eyes meet across the room, they'll see that we adore
We run, we hide, we still deny, we sneak away together
To satisfy this cousin-lust, this longing we can't tether
Hurry, hurry to our room, and lock the door behind us
Safely in each other's arms where nobody can find us
Soft warm lips burn into mine, and strong arms wrap around me
I melt into him once again, I swear he's going to drown me
Frantic fingers unbuttoning, then throwing clothes aside
We slip beneath the covers where we're swept into the tide
Our kisses more insistent, caresses now exploring
Sending firesparks throughout our bodies, until the flame is roaring
With lust and passion driving us, we defy the great tabu
And surrender to this chemistry that's known by very few
Afterwards, fulfilled, adrift in afterglow's sweet sea
Contentment fills us, then we sigh...this is more than "chemistry"
It must be wrong, why can't we stop, we pray to God above
There's no use to deny it, we are cousins....and we love

Wow. God, do I know how you feel. I really do. It's amazing how
something so beautiful and passionate exists between me and my cousin
as well and how I think everyone can see that we adore each other....but
you cant tell. We both are so afraid to tell and it just kills me. Thanks
for writing this! It's really good.
Posted Tuesday, March 26, 2002 @ 04:06 PM Thank you, CJ, I'm happy
that my poem has special meaning for you and your cousin. Few experiences
in life that can equal the depth and intensity of love between cousins.
How sad that for many of us this beautiful and fulfilling love must
remain a secret.
Cousin to cousin...my life compared to a staircase
By
J., on Sunday, July 9, 2000 - 10:42 am:
Well little cousin; let me tell you
Life for me ain't been no golden staircase
Few steps have been small and easy to take
Most steps have been giant leaps and hard to
overcome
I've had sharp splinters on the way up
with very little railin' to support me
Tacks and nails to slow me down
Some loose boards and some missin' steps
Not a piece of carpet to cushion the falls
Nothing is polished
Everything is going in different directions;
Changes.
Losses.
Decisions.
I've always been climbin',
Movin' on,
reaching landin' after landin',
Turnin' corner after corner.
I've travled in light,
But mostly through darkness,
Without turnin' back.
And young cousin of mine, neither will you.
You'll
kepp on goin'- don't you ever fall!
If you have a dream...keep climbing to reach it!
In darkness or light,
I'm still goin',
And life for me just ain't been no golden
staircase

No! I think he's simpley disgusting!!!! There's children on this
site and to think they have to read a pornographic message like that!!!!!
DISGUSTED!!!
By earl l. on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 - 10:17 am:
I agree. Freddy is a witless hack, laboring under the delusion that
he might be funny one day if he lives long enough, but he shan't.
By truth on Thursday, March 29, 2001 - 09:09 am:
Freddy is just telling the truth. All of the inbred bastard children
on this website need to read the truth. They have to grow up in a sterotypical
world. And because of your stupidity and selfishness they were put here.
What do you think the people at school will say to them? It will be
far worse than what Freddy wrote.

Maybe you should melt down your golden staircase
open a jewelery store in the city then get some real pussy. Splinter
free. Beats sayin' "hey cuz...you awake?
By Anonymous on Sunday, May 13, 2001 - 03:34 pm:
That kind of talk should not be allowed. All cousins that fall in
love don't have to have children and if they did, that doesn't mean
they would be retarded. Cousins married in the Bible, I see nothing
wrong with it.
By Anonymous on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 04:25 pm:
ok. if you are against cousin relationships, DON'T GO ON THIS SITE
do you not have a life that you just go around insulting people on the
net?? if you were getting any action you wouldn't be spending your time
on websites lambasting people.
By Anonymous on Friday, August 3, 2001 - 05:19 pm:
TO those who say anything against cousin who loves each other....GROW
UP! and fill your minds with facts !
And to
you Freddie , I hope you find the time to at least make your brains
work with intelligence and not just what's inside of your lil head right
now.
I feel so sorry for you.
For
more information about cousin couple marriages,
there is a recent article in The New York Times ("No Genetic
Reason to Discourage Cousin Marriage, Study Finds," April 3, 2002),
summarizing the recent findings. Refer also to the Web site for the National
Society of Genetic Counselors.
