REQUEST FOR INTERCESSION
by Jack Foss

Buffer me, God-stand between me
and strangers-link me to aliens

who don't speak my language.
I have no skill at breaking ice

or any gift to win them
unless you go between-

not before me as a cloud
or pillar of fire or avenger

sending hailstones to kill
my enemies. I will no longer

use you to justify myself.
If you are removed from me-

If I am alone, I ask you
to return-at least briefly-

and perform a few
introductory miracles.

Jack Foss began writing poetry again after a long hiatus. Active in the San Francisco Poetry scene of the 1960s, he published in now-extinct little magazines such as The San Francisco Review, The Galley Sail Review, Trobar, and The Plumed Horn. He has given readings in the 60s at the Poetry Center of San Francisco State University and in Monterey and Big Sur. His recent publications include The Hat #4, and Studio (Australia), Hanging Loose, and For Immediate Release, hosted at poetz.com.
