EMERGENCY
POSTCARD TO CARLO PASTORE
I
must tell you, Carlo, that it is only thanks to a car horn
that I am alive to write this to you! Heres what happened:
I was driving to pick you up so that we could drive around all night
listening to Prince & Ratt & avoiding our lives when suddenly
I realized that this is Now & not Then & your apartment,
nestled in the heart of the city we got old in together,
is a long way from here! Another thought: would you even have been
home? I swerved back to this life, shocked.
EMERGENCY
POSTCARD TO SAMPSON REED
Out
front, the Indian hawthorn doesnt have to try
to be an Indian hawthorn. It is the whiteness of those flowers
not struggling towards whiteness, not distracted
by other colors, that I love! Im convinced
that I have peculiar powers too. For instance: love.
Love: solid devotion in spite of. Also, I have this thing
I can do with my heart. I can fill it up or empty it out
with just a thought. Let me know how it is with you.
EMERGENCY
POSTCARD TO DAVID SAFFO
I dont understand
how you can live happily
in Florida, seeing how the very land of that state
seems only tenuously holding on. I mean: surrounded
by water on three sides! Connected to the continent
mostly by Georgia! The only help I need from you is a note
saying you need help. Right then Ill jump in the car,
roll down all the windows & drive overnight into Grasmere.
We can get coffee for three hours & drop our keys on the ground!
